City Hall Park: WESTERN TANAGER found on Wednesday and continuing there. Ovenbird, Common Yellowthroat, 2 Black-Throated Blue Warblers, Yellow-Breasted Chat also there.

Trinity Church: Yellow-Breasted Chat continues.

Bryant Park: Ovenbird and Common Yellowthroat continue

City Hall Park Western Tanager

The WESTERN TANAGER continues in the northeast corner of City Hall Park. It is usually very high and sometimes calls. The last record in the state was last winter near Cornell University, and the last in Manhattan was in Central Park in April 2008. Other birds in the park include 2 Common Yellowthroats, 2 Black-Throated Blue Warblers, 1 or 2 Ovenbirds, and a Yellow-Breasted Chat.

Weekly Bird Report:

Migration continues to slow down rapidly, but there are still a few lingering migrants.

RED-HEADED WOODPECKER continues near Sheep Meadow.
Ovenbird reported in the first half of the week at the north end.
Yellow-Rumped and Palm Warblers now few and far between.
Common Yellowthroat at the Pond on Friday.
Blue-Headed Vireo in North Woods Monday
Indigo Bunting reported at feeders Friday.
Both species of kinglets are around in small numbers.
Red-Shouldered Hawks are likely still migrating, as one was seen over the park on Friday.
Hermit Thrushes are around in much lower numbers than a week ago.

Sparrows are still around too. Along with decent sized flocks of Dark-Eyed Juncos, and the thousands of White-Throated Sparrows, a few Chipping, Song, Fox, Swamp, and Field Sparrows are around too. A Lincoln's Sparrow was also reported earlier this week at the Great Hill.

Extralimital: Yellow-Breasted Chat at Trinity Church and Millennium Park nearby. 2 other reports downtown. Northern Pintail at Randall's Island.

Weekly Bird Report 11/5/16

I will have a summary of the rare birds for the week usually on a Saturday. Also, on days without any rarities, no post would be made.

Sunday was an exceptional day for late migrants, with over a dozen warbler species in the park. Notable birds for the day included an Orange-Crowned Warbler at Locust Grove, a DICKCISSEL briefly seen at Sparrow Rock, an Indigo Bunting at Locust Grove continuing through Tuesday, an empidonax species of flycatcher, and a Yellow-Breasted Chat present at Sparrow Rock until at least yesterday.

A Northern Parula was seen at the Pinetum as recently as Wednesday.

A Black-Throated Blue Warbler female was spotted in the North End today, and a Lincoln's Sparrow was seen at the Great Hill.

An EASTERN BLUEBIRD was seen at Sparrow Rock on Tuesday.

Numbers of birds have rapidly declined in many species, but besides the late migrant extravaganza on Sunday, diversity is similar. Be on the lookout for late migrants such as Rusty Blackbirds (sightings at Gill throughout week), as well as Fox Sparrows, which are beginning to arrive.

About This Blog and First Alert

This blog (Central Park Rare Bird Alert) will mention just about all particularly notable birds I see, or hear about through social media and occasionally word-of-mouth. The sources I use include ebird.org, the Twitter #birdcp, and the New York ABA news link.  I will upload each post of a rarity (or rarities if there are multiple in the same timeframe) as soon as I can. These posts will be fairly frequent, especially in spring when migration is going on. I also run another blog called Mean Teen Birding Machine where I recount my own birding experiences, and my attempt at a bigger big year each year (currently I am at 162 species!). Anyway, here is the first alert.
